Eli’s good day – baby steps

Eli’s back on the behavior chart – working on keeping his hands to himself (euphemism for not punching the lights out of another kid) and using kind language (euphemism for not calling other kids stupid idiots)…

On Monday, Liz (one of Eli’s two teachers) came up to me during my lunch duty and started, “Amy, I wanted to tell you something Eliot did today…” – I bite my lip, hold my breath, and wait for yet another horrible story – “… that was AWESOME!”  Oh yay! i let out a sigh of relief and listen:

She tells me that, first, during a racing game at which the rules weren’t explained to Eliot completely before he started playing, Eli was told that he was racing wrong and he lost. He was upset, but he USED HIS WORDS to explain that it wasn’t fair because he didn’t know what he was supposed to do. Hooray  -no throwing things and lashing out!!

Then, Liz noticed that one of the kids changed the number of days since being in school when they weren’t supposed to. She made an announcement to the class that whoever did it should turn it back to the right number before the end of the day. Right then, in front of the whole class, Eli walked up and CHANGED THE DATE BACK, took responsibility, and apologized. Liz pointed out that he had a lot of integrity to do that (the kids are learning about integrity as the fourth segment of their social and emotional health curriculum this year).

It may seem like little things, but she was really positive about the changes she had seen in him 🙂

Yay!
